After graduating from nursing school, I started my nursing career in the Emergency Room (literally trial by fire initiation into the nursing field). Well at least it felt that way to me…
Honestly, as hard it was, I do believe starting my career in such a challenging department and having to develop some major thick skin prepared me for the challenges infertility has brought in current times. After after about 7 years of working in that same ER, I decided to become a travel nurse. Travel nursing is how I ended up on the West Coast. My first couple of assignments were in Southern California, then I made my way up to Northern California’s Bay Area. I started working as a travel nurse in an Emergency Room located in Silicon Valley. The pay, benefits, and retirement plan were the best I’d ever seen especially coming from the East Coast where all those things are severely lacking for nurses, so I decided to make it official and become a permanent staff member. Six months after becoming permanent staff, an opportunity presented itself to transfer to a same day procedure department. I decided it was a good time to try a different area of nursing. This change meant normal dayshift hours, no holidays, weekends off, and less stress. They definitely didn’t have to ask me twice…
I know what you’re thinking…This crazy girl just up and moved herself clear across the country over 3,000 miles away from all she’s ever known with no family…
Honestly, it’s a testament to how fate leads us on our individual journeys. And even though you’d like to believe you have all the control, you don’t. You’re literally a passenger in this ride we call life….
I truly believe I ended up exactly where I was suppose to be. Every opportunity for growth that I’ve wished for including some that I didn’t happened after moving to the Bay Area including meeting my husband, becoming a leader in a nursing department that I love, achieving a level of physical fitness I never thought possible for me in, and even becoming an OrangeTheory fitness Coach and inspiring others…
Eight months after transferring departments, I met my now husband. The most interesting thing about how we met is that I was introduced to him by a colleague turned good friend. He’s her brother. It’s crazy because I never saw myself dating a friend’s family member let alone brother, but there is no man alive that I would want to share this journey with. My dear husband has been my rock, my best friend, and voice of reason through this most challenging time. He has challenged me to dig deep for strength and never let me give up on myself. I owe a lot of the courage I had to take advantage of the previously stated opportunities to the encouragement and support my husband has given me. And I know with him by my side we will succeed in growing our family the way we dream of no matter how many challenges we face to get there…
